Panerai PAM359 Luminor 1950 Marina Watch
A relatively minor new introduction, the Panerai PAM 359 is still one of my favorite new Panerai watches for 2010. Why? Well this is the first Luminor Marina style Panerai in decades with full Arabic numerals (that I know of). Usually you get just a few of the hours with Arabic numerals, and the rest are simple markers. Here though, you get a full dial with actual numerals in a way that is still very much Panerai. The 12, 6, and 9 are larger - assisting with adherence to the classic look. The numerals are in lume, recessed a bit under a matte black dial. The watch case is in steel and 44mm wide, and water resistant to 300 meters. There is a sapphire crystal on the front and back of the watch.
Inside the PAM359 is Panerai's in-house made P.9000 automatic movement with a 3 day power reserve, subsidiary seconds counter, and the date. Having an in-house movement of course increases the desirability of the piece to collectors. For me, placing all Arabic numerals on the dial actually makes it easier to read and plays with the Panerai look in a good way. Price is in the $7,500 vicinity

Wow! Has it been hectic or what? I just moved into my new apartment, which explains the delay in posts. The new apartment will be a great change of pace, a place to bring new horizons and experiences. I'm already settling in, except for I can't figure out the wall mount on the TV. I'm definitely not manly inclined like that. I've already cleaned 3 or 4 times. I just love cleaning. Susie Homemaker much? And to make things even more hectic, Mother's Day, is Tomorrow, Sunday. I cherish my mother very much and hope tomorrow goes smooth and she has a great day.
To All You Mothers,
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Ten Terrific Tequilas To Ring In Cinco de Mayo
Drinking tequila if you get drawn out to the bars on Cinco de Mayo is a must. Consider the obligation akin to ordering Guinness on St. Patrick's Day.
But instead of just imbibing some mysterious "ita" drink conjured by the bartender (though some of these can be very nice), consider trying a new brand straight and chilled in order to really note the flavors.
Not a lot of Tequila gets consumed straight in the U.S. For many, they don't want to see it unless its in a traditional margarita, or otherwise tarted up with lots of fruit.
Here is my guilty pleasure when I'm not drinking it chilled and straight. Take a shot of tequila, and a 100% fruit frozen popsicle. Cut the the popsicle off the stick into a blender, add the Tequila, blend, and serve. Garnish with lime and or salt on the rim of the glass as with a standard margarita, or get jiggy with the salt. Blend the salt with orange zest, or fresh ginger, or fresh rhubarb, mint, or even basil. Be your own mixologist.
You can also use frozen fruit in a bag, but the popsicle approach makes for a perfect serving size, and friends get a kick out of it.

Attendees Brave Met Gala Rain
The rain mercifully held off yesterday evening during the Met's Costume Institute Gala, so that was one less battle for attendees in their gigantic, tight-fitting gowns. Navigating the Metropolitan Museum steps and getting into cars with those dresses, however, was unavoidable.
“Someone did warn me this event was all stairs. This was my first time, and it’s basically terrifying,” Maggie Grace said about trying to navigate the museums steps on the way to the ball. “But I only have four more stairs to go, I haven’t done a face-plant so far, so it’s a good night.” Camilla Bell explained how she got her voluminous custom-made Jason Wu gown into the car. “I had help, kind of folding it on top of my lap.” Eva Longoria thought her snug Marchesa dress was flattering. “If you can’t breathe, the fit is pretty good,” she said. She paused on the stairs, grasping a railing for support. How hard is it to walk in that dress? “Pretty hard,” Longoria said, and tottered up a few more steps. While Melania Trump was telling that her bustled Christian Siriano dress was not hard to sit in, the Donald was behind her shaking his head. “It’s not easy,” he piped up. Katie Couric had no choice but to climb the Met stairs, but took the easy route when she left the office in her Carmen Marc Valvo dress: “I took the elevator because I thought I’d fall down the stairs, so I didn’t go through the newsroom,”.
Fashion Caucus Determined to Copyright Clothing Designs
An official fashion caucus was recently formed on Capitol Hill with the express purpose of pushing legislation through Congress that would stifle the knockoff industry, something that has been driving the CFDA mad for ages. "We are working on a bill now for copyright protection and we are going to pass it this session," fashion caucus co-chair Carolyn B. Maloney (D., N.Y.) told WWD. If passed, the new bill would allow designers to register apparel, handbags, footwear, belts, and eyeglass frames for three years of copyright protection.
“Counterfeits with pirated designs and fake labels are absolutely prohibited by law, but it doesn’t provide any protection for the same fashion design when the pirates omit the label,” said Maloney. “One of the challenges we have is that people will go to a show and just sketch it, and by the end of the day, print it out and ship it out on the Internet to another country to make a copy of it. We’ve got to stop that and we will stop that.”
While the CFDA obviously supports the bill, the American Apparel & Footwear Association, among other apparel companies, doesn't like it as it stands, which could make passing it impossible. That happened before, when the Design Piracy Prohibition Act got stuck in committees because the industry as a whole couldn't agree on what it should say.
The battle to copy-protect clothing is so trying that high-fashion labels themselves sometimes give up. Last year Trovata gave up on its landmark case against knockoff giant Forever 21, which the label accused of knocking off some tops, after a two-year battle.
If designers and the caucus can push the new bill through, what will become of Forever 21 and other stores like it, where we — the people with budgets — shop? We'll all look hideous! And dated! You know, maybe! The real winners here, aside from the designers, will be the rich snobs who don't want to believe cheap things they may refuse to buy can look just as good as expensive ones. And to those people we say: Does Fiji water really taste better than Poland Spring?

Picasso Sets Sales Record
Picasso, 'Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust' , $106.5 Million
Last month The Classicist broke the news that a rarely-seen Picasso was expected to fetch up to $90 million at Christie's landmark Evening Sale of Impressionist and Modern Art, which took place yesterday in New York. Now the results are in and the painting, Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust (above) dated 1932, from the Collection of Mrs. Sidney F. Brody, was sold for a staggering $106.5 million to an unidentified telephone bidder, breaking the previous world record for any work of art sold at auction (set back in February when a Giacometti sculpture brought in $104.3 million). Yesterday's sale achieved a stunning $335.5 million in total. The Evening Sale portion of the Brody Collection also became the highest total for a single-owner sale offered at Christies New York, surpassing the landmark sale of the Collection of Victor and Sally Ganz sale in 1997. The 27 lots from the Brody Collection achieved $224.2 million.
Marc Porter, Chairman of Christie's Americas, commented: "This was a stellar night for Christie's and for the art market. The sale was led by exceptional prices for works by Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti and Henri Matisse from the Brody Collection, one of the greatest private collections to come to market. In addition, we witnessed great depth of bidding and strong results for important works from other American and European collections, including additional paintings by Picasso and works by Giacometti and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. We are honored to have been entrusted with so many remarkable works this season, and we are delighted to have delivered such positive results, including three new world auction records for Picasso, Georges Braque, and Jean-François Raffaelli."
Louis Vuitton Works With Charity
Need another reason to love Louis Vuitton? The luxury megabrand has just announced that it has signed a five year agreement with SOS Children's Villages to create a program called "Partnership for Children's Futures." The partnership will help children who are orphaned, abandoned or whose families are unable to care for them. These children live in SOS Children's Villages and are cared for by SOS mothers giving them the love and security of a real home and access to education until they are ready to be independent. Worldwide, SOS Children's Villages cares for over 78,000 children and young people in 500 children's villages and some 400 youth facilities.
It's not clear yet what form this partnership will take but I'm guessing that some limited edition bags might be in the offing. Louis Vuitton isn't the first luxury brand to work for children's causes. Luxury jeweler Bulgari's Save the Children campaign raised millions for children living in conflict-affected areas.
Diamond Studded Guns Belong To Drug Lord
Police in Mexico's Jalisco state got quite a surprise when they raided a hideout that they believe belongs to Valencia drug cartel boss Oscar Nava Valencia, they found 31 diamond-studded handguns. The gold and silver plated handguns were studded with diamonds and ornately engraved. Some bore the word lobo (Spanish for wolf) and others are decorated with wolf pictures. One gun bears a Ferrari logo. The federal authorities found a total of 38 guns, 75 magazines, several hundred cartridges, Rolex and Cartier watches, a Cadillac pickup truck, marijuana and some cash. Valencia (sometimes called "El Lobo") is the presumed operating chief of the Milenio Cartel. He is currently being held at the Altiplano prison, Mexico's highest security federal penitentiary.

The Gigayacht 'Eclipse' Sets Sail
When we last checked in on the progress of Roman Abramovich's new 557-ft. Eclipse (above), the world's largest and most expensive privately owned yacht, the Russian oligarch had installed a high-tech anti-photo shield designed to keep the paparazzi at bay. After numerous delays and costs spiraling to an estimated $1 billion, it seems as if the gigayacht is now finally ready to be delivered. The Huffington Post found some pix of the massive vessel leaving the dock of the Blohm +Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, the other day, a sight to behold (apparently the photo shield isn't working yet). In addition to the paparazzi spoiler, the Eclipse features a military-grade missile defense system, armor plating and bullet-proof windows. It also has three helipads, two swimming pools – the larger of which converts into a dance floor when drained – six foot home cinema screens in every guest cabin, and a master suite where the roof opens to allow Abramovich and his girlfriend Dasha Zhukova to sleep under the stars.

Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks Fifth Avenue Closes Two Stores:
Luxury department store Saks Fifth Avenue has announced another store closing. In March, the brand announced the July 10th closing of its Portland, Oregon store. It will also be closing the Saks Fifth Avenue store located in the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, California by July 17, 2010. In a press release, Steve Sadove, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Saks said that the closing is "consistent with our strategy of focusing our resources on our most productive stores."
Around 70 employees are employed in the San Diego store and will be offered transfer opportunities or will receive appropriate severance packages. Despite the closings Sadove remains bullish on luxury. I had the chance to hear Sadove participate in a panel discussion at the American Express Publishing Luxury Summit recently and it was clear that he is certain that luxury is regaining its footing and that the days of deep discounting and slowly moving merchandise are coming to a close, just not fast enough it seems to save these two stores
